What do I want to do?

Business Tips for 2024

April 9, 2024

Everything changes, we change, business changes, our customers change and so does everything else on the planet. Change is inevitable and change in my opinion is good.

Change also provides us with new opportunities, new pathways and it makes us feel alive. Sometimes change comes with uncertainty which scares us. In general, though I believe change is positive and I like it.

Over the past year I have looked at what I am going to do, a lot! This is what I am going to do work wise, what’s my purpose now? What’s my plan for the next 5 years or even the next 5 weeks?

As a result of this question, what am I going to do? I have been looking for inspiration by reading books, listening to podcasts, watching thousands of YouTube videos, talking to my mentor, talking to my friends and asking my husband “what do you think I should do?” On the 400th time I asked he actually lost it at me. Mind you the answer was always the same “Do whatever you want to do.”

Which does not help much when you have no idea what you actually want to do.

Will it be another business?

I have spent a fair chunk of time looking at buying another business. I talked to a range of people, did some due diligence, wrote a business plan or two and created a few financial models as well.

Before I move forward on anything, I look at my list of what I do want and what I don’t want.

  • I want to take trips with my family.
  • Right now, I want to work from home so I can be around for the kids. That one is open for negotiation
  • I want some more time to learn, connect and re-engage with the world as me.
  • I don’t want to work 70 hours a week right now.

In addition to looking for something on my own, I have had a number of people I respect and admire come to me with ideas of businesses I could start up, buy into and even take over. Some of those ideas interest me and some don’t.

When I bought into Aquaduck I just wanted to be in a tourism business. Looking back, it could have been anything really. My cost to entry wasn’t high so the risk wasn’t going to impact my family or our investments in a negative way.

Now I am a little more discerning. I will not be jumping head long into a new business that isn’t for me.

So far none of the business opportunities that have presented themselves really excite me. However, I remember that the last 3 businesses I owned didn’t excite me either but I still enjoyed the experience of owning and running them immensely.  So feeling excited isn’t always a prerequisite to the next opportunity.

So, I come back to – What do I want to do?

The challenge, as we all know, is that we don’t always know what we want to do. We often know what we don’t want to do. Then from that we usually end up doing something that we don’t mind doing just to do something. I don’t want that.

What I know right now is I want;

  • To do something I can enjoy. Not every minute of every day but overall.
  • To do something I am passionate about, where I can make a difference and I can give my energy to it.
  • And something that aligns with me, my values and my life.

What I know is, I love business.

  • I love talking about business.
  • I love looking at how to improve and grow businesses.
  • I love creating strategies for businesses.
  • I love hearing the experiences and learnings of business owners.
  • I love mentoring business owners.

I spend my time reading business books, listening to business podcasts and consuming everything I can about business, marketing, entrepreneurs and growth. It lights me up. I love helping business owners grow, improve and expand.

I remembered one of the first phone calls I got when I sold my share in the businesses. It was from a business mentor of mine. He suggested I consider business coaching / mentoring. Helping others grow their businesses and build businesses that work for them. That started this process. I have always wanted to help other business owners, give them strategies to grow and scale their businesses. Build businesses that work for them, businesses that meet their needs and not just control their lives.

I have found a purpose that involves business, helping others and gives me what I want in life. Business coaching and mentoring. I have found what I want to do.
